One time after class, when it was half-way through the semester, Prof Dawson gestured me to come speak to him. We made some small talk, and out of the blue, he asked: “Do you know how to swim?” Taken aback, I said: “I can semi-swim. Not an excellent swimmer.”
And then he said something that has stuck with me until now: “Keep swimming and don’t be afraid of drowning. As your professor, I’ll catch you before you do. You’ll be okay.”
